Changes at Fry Family Farms shows there’s a new game in town when it comes to achieving success as a small food and drink producer in America. It’s called collaboration and it’s playing out in dozens of ways across Southern Oregon.
The region is blessed with an abundance of creative food and drink makers, but challenged by its remoteness to larger markets and commercial kitchen space. Fry Family Farm Store, opened recently by long time local farmers, Steve and Suzy Fry, and their family. It’s a solution that puts the direct to consumer, maker-to-buyer model at the forefront.
From their early beginnings as local farmers in 1990 with borrowed land and money, the Fry’s have now come full circle. When we talked with Suzy Fry about the store’s inception, she glowingly gave full credit for the store to daughter Amber. She states “It was all Amber. From securing grant funding and construction loans, to working with all the contractors, the store is really her baby”. She manages the store with sister, Terra.
With the opening of the farm hub and store comes the means to support the success of family farms and food producers, and create a food distribution and zero food waste model for the region. Shoppers will find local favorites such as TerraSol Organics, Sherry’s Pasta, Rogue Creamery, By George cheese and others.
The Fry sisters have together created a bright, inviting retro-modern farm store space stocked with housewares and hanging plants, their branded line of jams, sauces, and granolas dialed in to the local community’s food needs and shopping experience. The store provides a much needed way for many to eat fresh and organic.
