5th street market Gordon Hotel

5th Street Market construction is now complete and new tenants are in the queue. The expansion bodes well for local farm to table food and drink.

The adjacent boutique Gordon Hotel, built by Eugene-based real estate developer Obie Companies, recently opened its doors with much-needed travel and residential accommodations. Portland’s Urban Restaurant Group collaborated with the launch of three unique eat and drink spots.

Carlita’s Rooftop on the 7th floor will bring diners the pleasure of shareable Mexican small plates with locally sourced ingredients, big Northwest flavors and phenomenal views. Expect exotic margaritas and an extensive list of tequila and whiskey options. On the first floor, The Gordon Tavern features “American Comfort food with a Northwest flair.” Sharable appetizers, crisp fried chicken, homemade chicken pot pie, and an array of craft beers and cocktails are the stars.

Not to be outdone by tacos and comfort food, 86’ed is bringing a bygone-era speakeasy vibe to the area featuring handcrafted cocktails, prohibition-era spirits, and food pairings. Reservations and a mystery password will be required for entry through a hidden door.

Magpie Coffeeshop will debut this spring in the new Market Alley as the latest addition to Marché Restaurant Group’s portfolio of farm to table eateries. Set in a compact airy space with soaring ceilings and a roll-up garage door, the cafe will boast buttery biscuits, big-bowl salads, savory hand-pies, cinnamon rolls and more from a kitchen team eager to step out with their much-loved favorites.

The Americana-style cafe will more than satisfy with a classic rotating diner-style pie case beaming with cream pies and seasonal classics.

In November 2020 Alesong Brewing and Blending opened its second tasting location, Alesong on 5th, at the existing Public Market, taking over the space previously occupied as the Sweet Cheeks Winery tasting room.

In the wake of relaxed COVID-19 restrictions in Lane County, Alesong extended its operation from bottle sales only to include tasting hours from 12 PM to 8 PM. Brewery patio members enjoy special perks from Noon to 5 PM every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Their new downtown location is pouring a variety of signature barrel-aged beers on tap paired with a few noshing plates.

Starting April 3, 2021, the Lane County Farmers Market will be relocating a few blocks north of its Park Blocks location to the 5th Street Market neighborhood while construction begins on the new market venue. Eventually, the renovated location will allow the farmers market to more than double its space from the current 65 vendors to sell and market their products. A new covered structure for weather and a conjoined indoor-outdoor space are in the plans.

Marketgoers to the temporary location on East Fifth Avenue between High and Oak Streets will be excited to learn of the nearly 700 parking spaces that will be made available in nearby lots.

Ciao Pizza Trattoria Has A New Detroit-Style Pizza Recipe

Ciao Pizza Trattoria might not be a new eatery in the Eugene area, but it does have an exciting addition to its menu: Detroit-style pizza. Approximately four miles down the road, the Italian pizza joint has introduced a unique pizza dish that locals will be intrigued to try. Chef and owner David Lucht has created a “volcanic ash” type concoction which is actually onion and garlic burnt to a crisp.

Lucht explains that he will then grind and mix the roasted vegetables with cayenne pepper and Hawaiian sea salt, which ends up as a delicious addition to a new type of Detroit-style pizza.
