After seven years, regulars to the Feast Portland food festival know how many food and beverage experiences they can pack into the four-day festival. But newcomers to the event, held Thursday, September 13 through Sunday, September 16, 2018, might be surprised.
The 2018 schedule includes such fun events as a 80s vs. 90s throwback cookoff from 20 chefs who will create their spin on food from the era of leg warmers and seven-layer dip, complete with a hair-metal cassette-tape soundtrack. Fun-Size events such as bar trivia with the team from Bon Appétit magazine and a 5K run with brunch waiting for participants at the finish line ensure that everyone gets to eat and drink something they’ll enjoy.
“It’s our favorite time of year when we get to welcome our chef and industry friends from around the country and around the world, all while shining a bright spotlight on the people, places and things we love about our city and state,” said festival cofounders Mike Thelin and Carrie Welch. “We say it every year, but we are more excited than ever about this year’s programming.”
Food magazine Bon Appétit presents Feast Portland. The magazine’s editor in chief, Adam Rapoport, raves about Portland’s food scene. “Portland is one of those cities that continues to impress us, which keeps us coming back year after year,” said Rapoport.
One of the things that makes Portland’s food scene so surprising is the sense of humor along with sophistication. For instance, the Nouveau Bistro dinner on Saturday night will uncork some of Beaujolais’ best wines alongside some of Portland’s. Some of the Northwest’s French-inspired chefs such as JJ Proville (L’Oursin, Seattle), Elise Walker (La Moule, Portland) and Althea Grey Potter (Oui Wine Bar + Restaurant, Portland) will serve up their twist on classic French bistro dishes.
Where else can you go to a tailgate that doesn’t even include a game except, of course, at the very first Feast Sunday Tailgate. Let your hair down after the previous night’s ritzy French bistro dinner with such low-brow favorites as cold beer and doughnuts from the all-star team of Karl Holl (Spatzle and Speck, Portland), Joshua McFadden (Ava Gene’s, Portland), Adam Sappington (The Country Cat, Portland), Melissa McMillan (Sammich PDX, Portland), Rick Gencarelli (Lardo, Portland), Don Salamone (Burger Stevens, Portland), NOLA Doughnuts and Hama Hama Oysters.
Feast’s Grand Tasting on Friday opens up 80 chefs, vintners, brewers, bakers, cheesemakers and food artisans from the Northwest and beyond for all-includive food and drink tasting. That really is “grand.” Bob’s Red Mill, the perennial favorite of Northwest bakers, is sponsoring the Sunday Brunch Village. For this four-hour event (who wants a rushed brunch?) Pioneer Courthouse Square offers food and beverages from 13 chefs, three wineries, three distilleries and two breweries.
Some Feast event tickets go fast. If you missed out on tickets to 2018’s coveted Feast Portland Dinner Series featuring trips and dinners with Gabriel Rucker, Andrew Zimmern, Joshua McFadden and others, put an asterisk on your calendar for June 2019, because this festival is only going to get better.
The Feast Portland food festival will continue its collaboration with Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon. This year, Feast is also supporting Urban Gleaners, which collects and redistributes more than 70,000 pounds of food monthly.
