Portland’s neighborhoods are overflowing with restaurants and artisanal food spots that draw nationwide attention. On one nondescript corner a short walk from Waterfront Park, Pine Street Market has gained notoriety since its opening in April 2016 as a microcosm of the city’s creative powers and fascination with ethnic eats. As food halls have begun to trend across the country, the Market’s similarity to the iconic “mall food court” rests only in the communal tables. A few of Portland’s renowned cooks are the distinguishing factors rather than the usual suspects of fast food chains.
The seven eateries, from Mediterranean food to fresh pressed juice, are drawing regular crowds. Brass Bar from Barista, is a stand-out in the crowd of coffeehouses around the city, thanks to a variety of roasts and talented baristas serving cold brews and decadent mochas.
Marukin Ramen, the first stateside outpost of a popular Tokyo chain now has two locations in Portland, including one in Pine Street Market. Marukin offers traditional ramen as well as vegan ramen. Different days of the week have different versions of ramen along with a few other portable items.
OP Wurst from Olympia Provisions, Portland’s revered sausage and charcuterie experts, is a take on the Wrigley Field foot-long. You can find the menu divided into traditional and nontraditional selections—as well as the option of a charcuterie plate.
Four chefs run the vibrant fast paced assembly line at Shalom Ya’ll, giving the Market its sole Mediterranean provision of Israeli street food. Freshly made flat breads, hummus, meats, and salads roll out of the tiny kitchen.
WizBangBar is the newest outlet from Portland’s Salt & Straw ice cream empire renowned for unique flavor combinations that have earned it a cult status that rivals Voodoo Doughnuts. The modernized and Portlanized “shop” may be a take on a soda fountain/dessert bar, but the real secret is in the soft serve base for sundaes, concretes and other creations.
Now open from early morning to late-night, eaters can mix ‘n’ mingle over breakfast, lunch, and dinner in this vibrant funky industrial space all day long.
